Ayurveda Case Study

Jiva successfully treats Diabetic Neuropathy in Eight Months Diabetes, known as Madhumeha (Madhu means ‘honey’ and Meha means ‘urine’) in Ayurveda, is classified as a Maha Rog (Major Disease) because, if not treated in time, it can lead to several complications in the body, including eye problems, joint pains, impotency, kidney failure, sexual and urologic problems, and more.

Diabetic Neuropathy, one of the most extreme complications of Diabetes, has become a common phenomenon nowadays. This problem is mainly caused in long-suffering Diabetics with uncontrolled sugar levels, and is usually brought under control with the help of stronger medication, and at times, hospitalization.

We recently treated a case of Diabetic Neuropathy at the Jiva TeleMedicine Center. The patient, Mrs. Kamla Mehta (name changed), was a 70-year-old Diabetic from Ahmadabad, India. She had been suffering from the disease for the last 25 years and had been insulin-dependent all this while. For the last five years, she had also been experiencing numbness and a constant tingling sensation in her legs.

After analyzing Mrs. Mehta’s case in detail, one of Jiva’s doctors found out that her case had reached the stage of Diabetic Neuropathy. Her prolonged problem of Madhumeha (Ayurvedic term for Diabetes) had led to aggravation of Vata (Air) and Nadi Shodh (nerve damage), which had caused symptoms like numbness and tingling sensation.

What is Diabetic Neuropathy? Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, in which nerves are damaged as a result of high blood sugar levels. Nerve injuries are caused by decreased blood flow and high blood sugar levels, and are more likely to develop if sugar levels are not well-controlled. On an average, the symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy begin 10 to 20 years after the diagnosis of the disease. Statistics indicate approximately 50% of people with diabetes will eventually develop nerve damage.

Some of the common symptoms of Diabetic Neuropathy include deep pain in the feet and legs, muscle cramps, numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the extremities, particularly the feet, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and constipation, among others.

Jiva’s Personalized Treatment Plan Jiva prepared a customized treatment plan for Mrs. Mehta, focusing on Madhumehar Chikitsa (treatment to control blood sugar levels) and pacification of Vata. In addition, she was recommended special nervine tonics to repair the damage done to her nerve tissues. She was also suggested Panchakarma (Ayurvedic therapies) in the form of snehan and svedana (oleation and fomentation) to improve blood circulation in her nerves. The personalized diet and lifestyle plan advised by Jiva was aimed at keeping her sugar under control and Vata in balance.

“Even after trying all kinds of treatment, my Diabetes problem had gone from bad to worse. I contacted Jiva as a last option. With the help of their herbal medicines and tailor-made diet chart, I was able to bring my blood sugar levels under control in just five months! The nerve problems
are also remarkably better now. Today, I urge every Diabetic to try
Ayurveda as a primary option and not as a last resort.”

The Result Mrs. Mehta took Jiva’s treatment for eight months. After the first five months, her sugar levels got back under control, and eventually, she did away with the insulin doses as well. Her problem of numbness had improved considerably; she felt the symptoms only when she walked too much. She is continuing with the medicines to keep her body healthy.

Life would have been very different for Ajay Sharma (name changed) had he not been vomiting 3-4 times every day! A 28-year-old from Mumbai, India, Ajay always had the drive to ‘make it big’. But his health had other plans for him.

For five years, Ajay’s life has been turned upside down because of his problem of hyperacidity, characterized by a constant burning sensation in his esophagus. The smell of petrol, kerosene, gases, etc. made him nauseate. Moreover, he also felt restless all the time – a tendency that had hampered his concentration levels to a great extent. Because of these problems, he was unable to find suitable employment for himself. And when he did, he had to give a variety of explanations for his frequent absences from work – most of which failed to impress the bosses.

Ajay had tried all kinds of treatment to get rid of his problem, but things only worked out in bits and pieces. Nothing was lasting enough to have a long-term impact. Highly distressed with his life and unable to find the right solution, Ajay called the Jiva TeleMedicine Center on the recommendation of a friend.

Jiva found out…
That Ajay’s condition was the result of faulty choices made during his young age. As a student, he was in the habit of consuming junk food on a daily basis. Despite being a working woman, his mother always ensured he was well fed during her absence. She prepared nutritious lunch and evening snacks for him daily, but everything went in vain. Ajay was more interested in the samosas, tikkis and burgers that were so easily available in the locality. Moreover, his parents’ ‘non-availability’ in that stage of his life had increased his stress levels to a great extent. These factors had led to the aggravation of Pitta in his body.

Understanding Amalpitta
Pitta, the Ayurvedic humor representing Fire, is responsible for controlling digestion and metabolism in the body. In an aggravated state, it leads to improper digestion of food and production of ama (toxins). This ama gets accumulated in the digestive channels and causes Hyperacidity. Known as Amalpitta in Ayurveda (Amal means sour and Pitta means heat), Hyperacidity is a condition characterized by an increase of sourness and heat in the body. In Ajay’s case, the persistent vomiting was caused by regurgitation of undigested food from his stomach.

Our doctor suggested…
A customized line of Ayurvedic treatment for Ajay, after analyzing his case history and present symptoms in detail. The treatment consisted of herbal medicines for pacification of Pitta as well as elimination of toxins present inside his digestive channels. For this, he was recommended a strict anti-Pitta diet that contained fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. All kinds of spicy, fermented and junk foods were strictly prohibited. Additionally, he was also prescribed nerve and brain relaxing tonics to reduce the levels of stress.

In nine months’ time…
Ajay felt remarkable improvement in his condition. His vomiting had stopped completely and he was feeling quite energetic. The stress levels had gone down significantly and he was a lot calmer now.

“I had lost faith that my condition could ever be treated. I was feeling helpless when I contacted Jiva. But, with the help of their Ayurvedic medicines and tailor-made diet plan, I have not only managed to put an end to the vomiting, but have also started feeling better overall. In retrospect, I feel I could have stopped this from happening to me by simply altering my lifestyle.”

Jiva treats PCOS through Ayurvedic TeleMedicine
The Jiva TeleMedicine Center (TMC), a first-of-its-kind concept in the world, was established in 1998 as an integrated center of telephonic health consultation. Today, we have on board 125 Ayurvedic doctors and consultants who provide free health consultations to 5,000 patients daily.

More than 70% of these people call us from remote Indian towns and villages – such as Churu, Jhunjhunu, Jharsuguda, Betul, and Baran, among others – where authentic medical facilities are not easily available. The Jiva TMC specializes in the treatment of both, regular and chronic disorders. We have successfully treated numerous cases of Diabetes, Arthritis, Migraine, Hypertension, Obesity, Sexual Problems, Skin Diseases, and all kinds of Women’s Disorders.

Read on to know about how Jiva helped a patient suffering from PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) treat her menstrual disorder and infertility with the help of customized Ayurvedic medicines, diet and lifestyle plans.

The Case
Mrs. Ruchi Khanna (name changed), a 27-year-old married IT executive from Indore (Madhya Pradesh), called the Jiva TMC in May 2010 in a severe state of depression. She had been suffering from Amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and Infertility for the last seven years. She was also suffering from weight gain, feeling of heaviness, hyperacidity, constipation, hirsutism and hair fall. Her state of prolonged Amenorrhea had resulted in severe depression. And, the worst part was, all the associated stress and tension were further aggravating her condition. All these symptoms were indicative of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, one of the most common female endocrine disorders.

What is PCOS?

Modern View
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (also known as Polycystic Ovary Disease) is a problem in which a woman’s hormones are out of balance. A common endocrinal disorder, it affects approximately 5-10% women of reproductive age (15-45 years) and is one of the leading causes of infertility or menstrual disorders in women.

Patients suffering from PCOS have multiple cyst formations in their ovaries, which result from disruptions in their normal menstrual cycle. As a result, the ovary becomes enlarged and produces excessive amounts of androgen and estrogen hormones. This excess, along with the absence of ovulation, causes infertility, acne, and growth of extra facial and body hair. Insulin resistance, diabetes and obesity are closely associated with PCOS as visible symptoms.

The Ayurvedic View According to Ayurveda, PCOS can be caused due to an imbalance of any of the three doshas (Ayurvedic humors), the prime ones being Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water). Aggravated Pitta causes contamination of the dhatus (tissues) like rasa (nutrient plasma) and rakta (blood). This further causes accumulation of ama (toxins) in the weaker channels of the body.

In the case of PCOS patients, these toxins get accumulated in the manovahi strotas (channels of the mind), leading to an imbalance of hormones secreted by the pituitary gland. This condition results in imbalance of female hormones and increase in Kapha, which causes formation of ovarian cysts (collection of fluids within an ovary), anovulatory periods (no ovulation) and other symptoms.

Jiva’s Customized Treatment Plan
In the case of Mrs. Khanna, Jiva’s main challenge was not only to handle her physical imbalance, but also help her come out of depression. After analyzing her case history in detail, our TMC doctor created a tailor-made treatment plan for her, consisting of authentic herbal medicines, diet chart as well as a lifestyle plan.

As part of our treatment, we administered cleansing herbal formulas to remove accumulated toxins from the manovahi strotas and balance the hormones. This was followed by the use of Pitta and Kapha pacifying herbs in order to facilitate the cyst-breaking process, and aid in normalizing the cycle of ovulation and menstruation.

Mrs. Khanna’s diet and lifestyle plan contained some simple suggestions that could facilitate improvement in her condition:
Choose low glycemic index foods – such as cauliflower, tomatoes, onions, peaches, apples, grapefruit, etc. – as they help in slowing the rise in blood sugar levels
Exercise on a regular basis in order to keep your weight in check
Avoid refined flour and sugary foods
Have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to increase the immunity of the body
“I was in severe depression when I contacted Jiva. A sense of inferiority had seeped into my life due to prolonged infertility and amenorrhea. Jiva’s medicines not only normalized my menstrual cycle, but also helped me get back my confidence and come out of depression. Thanks to Ayurveda, I am now positive about embracing motherhood soon.”
The Result
After taking Jiva’s medicines for three months, Mrs. Khanna witnessed remarkable improvement in her condition. Her menstruation became regular, which was a very significant achievement. Her body started feeling light and her mind relaxed. She continued with the medication for another six months. Eventually, she lost seven kilos of weight and noticed reduction in hair fall. Moreover, her menstrual cycle was completely regulated now, leading to balancing of hormones in her body.

Mrs. Khanna is presently undergoing special treatment for strengthening her reproductive system and helping her in conceiving.

Trust Ayurveda in Matters of the Heart!
Ayurveda is increasingly becoming one of the most preferred forms of alternative treatment in the world. At the Jiva TeleMedicine Center, we provide free health consultations to over 5,000 patients on a daily basis, covering a broad range of chronic and lifestyle disorders that are impacting the Indian community today. We have successfully treated thousands of cases of Diabetes, Arthritis, Obesity, Hypertension, Asthma, Skin Diseases, Migraine, Menstrual Disorders, etc. by customising our treatment – medicines, diet and lifestyle – according to each patient’s specific health needs.

Despite its growing popularity, numerous people are wary of approaching Ayurveda when it comes to their heart problems. This is mainly due to the ‘self-imposed urgency’ of treatment and the myth that Ayurvedic cure is not fast enough to make an instant impact. On the contrary, at Jiva, we have been successful in treating various cases of heart diseases with the help of extensive analysis and precision, giving our patients long-term relief, quickly.

Coronary Artery Disease – A Jiva Case Study One interesting case is that of Mr. Bhuvanesh Prasad (name changed), a 53-year-old government servant from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Mr. Prasad had been experiencing chest pain, back pain, restlessness and perspiration on a regular basis from 2007. When his pain became unbearable, he visited a cardiologist and was advised to go for an angiography. The reports revealed a clear case of Coronary Artery Disease, with blockage detected in more than 70% of his coronary arteries. He also had the problem of Systemic Hypertension, with extremely high BP levels.

Mr. Prasad was suggested angioplasty – the technique of mechanically widening a narrowed or obstructed blood vessel. However, while operating on him, the doctors detected that his coronary arteries were so narrow that they could blast during the procedure. As a result, the procedure was terminated midway and he was prescribed medicines for a lifetime, with the warning of a Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) at any stage of his life.

Here was a man who was willing to do everything in his power to prevent a heart attack; but, unfortunately, modern medicine was not able to help him. Desperate for a solution so that he could get his Angioplasty done, Mr. Prasad called the Jiva TeleMedicine Center in October, 2010, to seek Ayurvedic advice.

Jiva discovered…
A Jiva doctor analysed his case in detail by referring to his reports and complete medical history. The analysis revealed that his circulatory channels (Rasavaha Srotas) had been blocked due to the accumulation of ama (toxins) in the body. These toxins had deposited on the blood vessels, leading to clotting of blood and obstructing flow through the coronary arteries.

According to Ayurveda, ama – the toxic material produced by undigested food – is the main cause for heart diseases. And upon deeper scrutiny of his case, it was discovered that the patient had irregular food habits and a sedentary lifestyle, which had led to the formation of these toxins in his body.

What we suggested…
Jiva initiated Mr. Prasad’s treatment process with herbal medicines for Srotoshodhan (clearing of blockage from channels) and to address his Naadi Durbalta (weakness of arteries). In addition, medicines were administered to dilute his blood and keep his BP at the normal levels. The patient was also recommended a diet and lifestyle in conjunction with his present condition. The main aim of the treatment was to strengthen his arteries and restart the flow of blood through them.

After four months…
The Jiva doctor advised Mr. Prasad to go for an ECG and other relevant tests after four months of treatment. His report revealed absolutely no abnormality! More than 90% of the blockage had been removed and blood supply from the narrow arteries had started again. Moreover, his BP was also well under limit. In fact, the cardiologist recommended that there was absolutely no need for an angioplasty.

The patient is continuing with his medication (the dosage has been reduced though) just to keep his heart functioning well and to keep the BP under control.

Patient Speak
“I tried Ayurveda only to ensure that my heart was in the right condition
for an Angioplasty. Little did I know that Ayurveda would actually end up treating my coronary artery disease! Jiva’s personalized form of treatment was
great and easy to implement. I would say, people suffering from heart disease should not shy away from approaching Ayurveda. At least I can vouch
for its effectiveness!”
